This blog is for INDA students investigating the relationships between beliefs and buildings. This will be the digital venue for posting student work, commentary among students, and critiques.
Good work Thames! All very interesting. But, your analysis was a bit too much like a non-magic tattoo--only skin deep. Go deeper! You did an okay job of explaining what, but very little to explaining why? and how? Both of these answers will help you design more than the answer to 'what' will. If I asked you--never mind, I AM asking you--to tattoo the site in front of Chula, how would you do this? What effect would this tattoo conjure? How do you tattoo space? Please answer these questions for Friday's blog pin-up. Here are some critiques and suggestions:
__TALK TO AJ Jakkapat!!!!! You have a very nice Aj, because I can give you his number: 0894488422. Prepare an interview for him. Ask him about the 'how' and 'why' of his profession. You can even be bold enough to ask him how he thinks one can tattoo space. How does one tattoo skin, but not of a human, but of a landscape, a wall, a building. This is your project, have fun with it and talk to the ultimate expert.
__here is an article that came out last week with an interview with Aj Jakkapat: http://bk.asia-city.com/city-living/article/tattoo-master
__the images of the tatoos you included are lovely; however, they are just images. Do something with them! You show a matrix of tattoos but do not help us understand the beliefs behind them at all. That is the only thing that matters in this project--not what they look like, but how they are believed. You could probably live trace these images and then use the lines as you wish in diagrams an even potentially modeling. I want to see a very clever, clear and large diagram that organizes these tattoos according to the beliefs associated with them.
__visually find a way of documenting how a belief in the character of a tattoo, and the way it is applied to the body, instills 'powers' in an individual. In other words, visually show us (NO PHOTOS) how ink, via a belief, can manifest itself in a physical action or disposition
__next, how does this connect with architecture? How do architectural skins affect a user's psyche? You will have to work very very very very very very very hard in researching, documenting and theorizing the role of 'skin' in architecture, and connect it with the 'magical' tattoos you are analyzing. Reiser + Umemoto, and Herzog and De Meuron are 2 of the best firms dealing with the issue of 'skin' in architecture. Please complete diagrams that ANALYZE VISUALLY the role, meaning, function of 'skin' in architecture. Present this ON FRIDAY on the blog by 1 pm.
__diagram, step by step, the ritual used in making a tattoo on skin. How can you reproduce this at the scale of architecture? What is its step by step?
__your model is a good first step. But, already notice the difference. You dropped walls onto the land. A good breeze, a drunk rugby player, or a flood (one is on the way) could wipe away your 'tattoo' forever. Could a breeze, drunk rugby player or a flood wipe the tattoo from Jolie's back? No. it is permanent. It is indelibly inscribed into her surface, unavoidable every time she sees herself in a mirror. In other words, the tattoo is there with you every time you see yourself in a mirror, every time you see yourself, every time you remind yourself who you are. How could this not make it into your psyche? Now, what is the equivalent in space? More specifically, where and how is the equivalent achieved on our site? HAVE YOUR FIRST ANSWER DONE BY FRIDAY
